Join City Arborist Mark Reiland and Community Tree Steward Ashley McHugh for a walk through Evergreen Cemetery as we explore Portland's urban forest through the lens of Portland's Living Landmarks, Ashley's video series highlighting extraordinary trees across the city. Many of the trees featured in the series can be found in Evergreen, offering a unique opportunity to experience their stories firsthand.

Along the way, we'll discuss Portland's ongoing tree planting efforts, the importance of a healthy urban forest, and how investments in tree canopy growth help create a more resilient, beautiful, and sustainable city for generations to come.

Join the Sierra Club Maine Chapter, City Arborist Mark Reiland, and us for a native tree planting and park cleanup at Deering Oaks Park. Participants are welcome to join the tree planting, cleanup, or both!

Join us for a volunteer tree planting day at Evergreen Cemetery on Wednesday, May 6, 4–6pm (rain date May 13), as part of a multi-year effort to plant over 80 trees, adding 15–20 this season, with all tools provided, thanks to a generous gift in memory of Val Healey; RSVP today!

Join the Portland Parks Conservancy and the Portland Lantern Walk on Sunday, October 19th, 2025 for a 100% local, free event celebrating art, light, and community.

The evening kicks off at 5 PM with music and art at the bandstage led by Emilia Dahlin, followed by a 6 PM lantern walk through our beloved community spaces.

ASL interpretation will be provided, and there will be free lantern-making workshops.

We will visit parts of Portland’s Freedom Trail and highlight some of the remarkable people and places connected to Maine’s African American history. It will be a relaxed, celebratory walk with opportunities to enjoy the trail and pick up a few stories along the way .

We’ll meet at the Franklin Street Wharf, the starting point of the Portland Freedom Trail, also known as the Maine State Pier.  

Parking is available on nearby streets or in downtown garages within a short walk of the Wharf.
