Volunteer Coordinator

Working under the supervision of the Executive Director of the Portland Parks Conservancy in close collaboration with the City of Portland’s Parks, Recreation, and Facilities staff, the Volunteer Coordinator plans and manages outdoor workdays and events for volunteers in the public parks of Portland, Maine. This is a 20 hour/week seasonal position, paying $19/hour.  

Approximate dates: May 17 through September 30. Evening and weekend work is required.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule, coordinate, manage, and lead public park clean up and improvement projects for volunteers including neighborhood groups, park friends groups, businesses, schools, youth groups, etc.

  • Recruit volunteers; respond to volunteer inquiries and support relationship building with targeted organizations, business, and community groups.

  • Ensure volunteers are informed about safety hazards and precautions and trained on implementation of project tasks; reinforce rules governing volunteer participation and safety.

  • Keep volunteer supplies stocked and organized, including volunteer refreshments.

  • Enter data in an online volunteer management database and assist with reporting of volunteer statistics and accomplishments.

  • Help draft volunteer engagement procedures, protocols, reports, and handbooks.

  • Organize and manage volunteer photos and files.

 Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead and motivate groups of volunteers of all ages, including youth. Experience leading volunteers in gardening, landscape maintenance, habitat restoration, trail work or similar is as plus.

  • Ability to work in a team and to work with people with different backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexualities, ages, and viewpoints.

  • Strong commitment to public service and volunteerism.

  • Positive, professional and engaging demeanor and a strong customer service ethic.

  • Must be in sufficient physical condition to perform Volunteer Coordinator duties, with ability to lift 40 pounds or more. Able to work outdoors in all kinds of weather and site conditions.

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and have reliable transportation and a valid motor vehicle operator's license.

  • Comfortable with computers including proficiency with data management and Microsoft Office applications.

  • Must be available to work weekends and evenings.

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
