The Power of You: Parks in the Time of COVID-19

Parks in The Time of COVID-19

Through these last few months of pandemic isolation, Portland’s parks and open spaces have been busier than ever. Portland’s parks offer us places to go walking or running, play basketball or tennis, and—now that playgrounds are open again—reach for the sky on the swing set. Being outside is key.

Most important—our public parks are open to everyone, offering the opportunity to have positive experiences outdoors, regardless of where they live or their social or economic status.

Eighty Nine percent of Portland residents live within a ten-minute walk to their neighborhood park—a remarkable accomplishment. Like many communities, however, there is a significant gap between dollars required and those allocated for parks and recreation, and the challenges of COVID-19 have forced City park staff to allocate their limited bandwidth to the most critical projects.

The Portland Parks Conservancy can help in two ways. First, by raising private funds to support City park projects. Second, and perhaps more impactful, by organizing volunteers to tackle the numerous small tasks in each park, allowing city staff to use their time more efficiently.

The Value of YOU!

Did you know a single volunteer work hour is estimated to be worth $25?! Volunteerism can have an enormous positive impact on Portland's 66 parks. Volunteering just two hours is much MORE than a $50 donation to the City parks, it frees up a staff member to repair a playground, install a fence, or construct outdoor learning spaces - something sorely needed as schools explore ways to reopen this fall.

What do you say? Do you have an hour to spare for the parks?
